Fact: I Hate the Media's Ability to Fuel Mass Hysteria

Gjob kid, you've killed us all

So, the Swine flu (or H1N1 as the World Health Organization is now dubbing it) hit Mexico pretty hard. A lot of people sick, several hundred dead, and a huge chunk of Mexico's economy down the crapper due to imposed restrictions.  And unfortunately, a few tourists who had visited the country went back to their homes and spread the disease. Naturally, the media got a hold of this story and decided to report about it.

Now here is where it starts to go crazy.

Over the next few days, every station I turned on and every news outlet I surfed online had the basic headline of, "SWINE FLU IS SPREADING!!! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!" WHO did not help with the hype, either. They were talking about past pandemics, such as the 1918 flu pandemic that killed 100 million people. Egypt demanded all of the pigs in the country slaughtered (I didn't even know that pigs could thrive in desert climates). People were told by Joe Biden himself to stay out of confined spaced. I would be lying, being a self-diagnosed hypochondriac, if I said that I didn't get sucked into the worry.

Of course, this hasn't come true. Millions of people every year get the flu, and thousands in the United States alone pass away from complications from influenza. Of course, though, the media cashes in on the opportunity to make money when hysteria is involved. Especially when it comes to a virus usually everybody gots at some point in their lifetime (if not more) with an ethnic flair.

Swine flu just SOUNDS bad.

In the end, it hasn't been catastrophic. Worldwide cases are around 900, which on paper sounds like a lot, but when you're speaking about 7 billion people, you'd expect a little bit higher number after about a week or so. And they started to repent, saying that "America doesn't need to worry now, we blew it out of proportion!" Oie.

At least they told us that pork was safe to eat. I had some the other night. It was delicious.

Wind Plays Fetch with Dog

Dog flies, but much less gracefully that this one

Interesting piece of news. On Saturday, a Michigan couple got the surprise of their life - probably not the happy kind - when their pet chihuahua literally blew away.

Dorothy and Lavern Utley were setting up their display at a local flea market when Tinker Bell, an 8-month old long-haired chihuahua, was picked up and tossed by a 70 MPH gust of wind.

Luckily, there is a happy ending! On Monday, the Utleys, with help of a pet psychic, were able to locate the 6-pound pup over a mile away from where she was swept off. She was perfectly fine, except for being hungry and a tad dirty.

I'm pretty sure they will never look at frisbees  the same again.

This is Totally Getting Made into a Movie

I don't know if you've been following this in the new the past few days, but it is one of those things I see Steven Spielberg picking up.

Over the course of the past few days, Somali pirates had taken control of the Maersk Alabama, an american container ship taking food aid to starving nations. But it wasn't easy for them, as the crew put up quite the fight. And amazingly, in an act of something usually found in hollywood films, the unarmed sailors were able to wrestle back control of the ship from their captors. A sailor even stabbed one of the insurgents with an icepick in the hand and tied them up on the boat. Sounds like somebody got their script mixed with Goodfellas.

Unfortunately, the pirates were able to escape with the captain, Richard Phillips, into a small lifeboat, where they were basically holding him captive, demanding release and ransom. He tried a daring escape at a time by jumping out of the life boat, but was quickly recaptured. Over the course of the next day, the lifeboat became stranded in the ocean due to its running out of fuel.

And then, today happened. As the captain (yarrr) of the pirates was discussing ransom with the U.S. onboard the USS Bainbridge, Richard once again jumped ship, except the Navy SEALs were ready, and tore the pirates a new one. Three of the pirates were killed, and the fourth was immediately taken into custody.

I've been following this pretty closely the past few days, and I thought the entire time, "this is going to end in some crazy way, and the rights will be gobbled up immediately." Now that I'm happy that one half is right, the next half is probably only so far off...

Regardless, I am happy to hear that everything ended ok. You go guys!
